"Jim Brooks -
a Montana range cowboy in Perris"
Country Legends magazine article, July 2010
Article and photographs by Karen Bradford
This article won a Public Relations Society of America Polaris writing award
After reading the classic novel Smokey, the Cow Horse, young Jim Brooks began his dream of horses and the wide-ranging lifestyle of a cowboy on the unlimited Western plains. Working toward that goal --- despite no black cowboy role models in movies nor anywhere while growing up in Georgia and Pennsylvania --- became a life-shaping experience for him.
Alfonsina's Story
An award-winning account of a cleft-palate repair in Peru
"Alfonsina's Story," Karen's description and photos of one surgery to help a two-year-old Peruvian girl, received a near-perfect score and a Polaris Award for feature writing from the Public Relations Society of America. Dr. Angelo Capozzi, the founder of Rotaplast, said "Alfonsina's Story" should be given to each Rotaplast mission participant because it is such a moving and technically accurate description of a cleft-lip surgery.

"Beyond Lhasa ... Five days on a washboard road" - A pilgrimage around Mount Kailash
As if Tibet itself --- mostly closed to outsiders until the last 30 years --- wasn't remote enough, Karen and five friends travelled another five days by Landcruiser, bouncing along dusty, rutted roads on the north side of the Himalayas to reach their starting point to trek around sacred Mount Kailash: the center of the universe to Buddhists, the navel of the earth to Hindus.
The Rooftop of the World ... The Land of Eternal Snows ... Shangri-la ...Tibet! This is a world where its gentle Buddhist religion inspires rescuing the errant insect that lands in a cup of tea--in case it is someone's reincarnated grandmother!--and reveals a fascinating history of monks, monasteries, and spectacular landscapes of unimagined proportion.
